2017-01-10 ShanghaiWOWeng

A new seafood market has landed Daning district. Occupying the entire third floor and fourth floor of the Baoyan Shopping center it is one of the largest in town!

20,000 square meters of market space filled with over 500 different types of seafood!

There’s so much seafood here you might think you’ve accidentally walked into an aquarium!

Shrimps imported from Thailand for CNY258 per pound

Over 100 of these immense king crabs are sold every single day

If you go elsewhere, expect to pay at least RMB 500 or 600 for just a pound of this king crab. In this market, it’s just RMB 168!

You might these these funny-looking things are aliens, but they’re actually what some people call a horseshoe crab.  These unique red crabs only appear in the right season, but they’re still just RMB 158!

Eat seafood the right way

On all the price tags, it also gives you advice (in Chinese) on how best to eat all the seafood.

If you’re worried about keeping seafood fresh at home, why not go to a maritime workshop? You can opt to buy fresh seafood from the supermarket, take it to this workshop, choose how you want it to be cooked and they’ll do the hard work for you! You just have to pay a small fee for the privilege.

The shop is located at the 5th floor.

It offers square tables and benches with a very Chinese feel!

That is if you cross China with Pirates of the Caribbean...

If you’d prefer a more intimate setting, there are plenty of private rooms to choose from, each with their own theme: Caribbean, Persian Gulf, etc...

All the chefs come from Ningbo and Guangdong, seaside cities so you know that they’re all experience in cooking seafood.

This is that massive king crab after it’s been pulled apart and put back together!

Don’t worry: it’s surprisingly easy to eat every part of the crab with nothing but chopsticks.

If you’re one of those people who can’t stand the smell of fish, there are options for you too. This fish is steamed in such a way that it doesn’t actually smell of anything!

Every fish has been freshly plucked from the South China Sea the very same day you eat it, and steamed to retain its original flavour.

With a sprinkling of salt and pepper, these fresh shrimp are more than enough for one person. They’re a hell of a lot meatier than they look!

Don’t judge it before you try it. Jellyfish head is actually one of the most popular dishes here!

Even if you don’t like seafood, they have a menu of the usual Chinese dishes for you to choose from too.

Of course you can buy drinks here too!

Steamed hot pot

Of course in addition to the above restaurant, there are other types of restaurant too!

Try eating king crab with scallions. The legs, the body, it’s all a truly delicious combination.

The freshness of the seafood is preserved as much as possible. It’s perfect for two!
